What Does Financial Freedom Mean to You?

Hello! My name is Glen Tiew, the founder of this website What to Invest In Singapore.

Most recently, I had the chance to be able to go to the United States and I must say that it’s an incredible experience for me. I managed to have so many new experiences and learning lessons that I will never ever forget.

You probably have heard about the saying that “Money can’t buy happiness.” Well, that’s definitely true but I feel that it’s probably true only to a certain extent. After all, money is a tool that gives us the ability to do a number of things in life.

One of which is the ability to create memories. When you shift your money to spend it on getting experiences instead of regular physical items, you’ll find a lot joy out of it that cannot be explained with words alone.

This is especially when you spend your money on an experience that you get to enjoy with your friends and loved ones.

Financial Freedom Is…

This was a trip that allowed me to have a different taste of financial freedom especially since I was away from Singapore for almost 22 days. One where financial freedom means the ability to have the freedom to travel around and experience different cultures and people.

I’d say that this is probably one of the meanings of financial freedom to me right now since I don’t have any kids at the moment. To someone else, financial freedom would probably mean the ability to have more time with their kids without having to worry about their finances.

How about yourself? What does financial freedom mean to you? (feel free to share in the comments below).

Keeping in mind your meaning of financial freedom will really help you to keep you going towards your financial goals. It’s going to be stronger than just having figures in your mind.

Go Beyond the Money

Being away from Singapore for almost 22 days, not only allows you to think about what financial freedom means but it also allows you to think about what’s truly important beyond money alone.

For entrepreneurs, it’s important to remember to always be in business not solely because of the money alone but to have your focus on the value that you want to bring into society. I believe that when you focus on the value then the money will follow.

If money is the focus instead of the value, it may work for the short-term but it will not work for the long run.

For regular employees and self-employed individuals, I think it’s important to also keep in mind your reason and purpose beyond the motivation of working for a monthly salary as well.

Maybe as a teacher, your real motivation is the joy of seeing your students succeed. Maybe as a personal assistant, your motivation is simply the ability to give your boss lesser headaches or to send your kids to higher education.

Those who do find their purpose in what they do are usually the ones who do what they do for a very long time.

Knowledge is Power

I must say that this trip would not have been possible if I did nothing about myself.

This reminds me about what I read from the book, Think & Grow Rich. In chapter 5 of that book, it talks about the importance of acquiring specialized knowledge VS general knowledge.

It states that specialized knowledge is the key to wealth. But once you acquire this specialized knowledge, you have to apply it. The author emphasizes that nothing will happen if you just acquire specialized knowledge without any form of action.

Looking back, if I didn’t go out to go in-depth to learn various wealth creation strategies and act on them then none of this would have ever happened.

Keep in mind that learning never stops. No matter how high your education level is, continue to always keep learning.

This quote emphasizes that successful people are the ones who never stop learning: “Successful men, in all callings, never stop acquiring specialized knowledge related to their major purpose, business, or profession. Those who are not successful usually make the mistake of believing that the knowledge-acquiring period ends when one finishes school.”

The Great Steve Jobs (Apple Founder) knows this as well and that’s why he said “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish.”

How About You?

I hope my personal sharing can offer you some form of inspiration and help you to broaden your mind about wealth in one way or another.
